Holly’s Holiday (2012)Brief Summary: Holly works at an ad agency with a photographer named Milo.Holly and Milo clash over whether their campaign should sell the fantasy of a “perfect life.” Holly wants a perfect life, but Milo believes that life’s imperfections are what make it beautiful.Part of what makes Bo such an effective deconstruction of idealized love story characters is that like himself, his idea of a “perfect life” is artificial, and only a mannequin like Bo can live or enjoy it.
Tofu-Shaming: As in Mistletoe Over Manhattan and Desperately Seeking Santa, more shade is thrown on tofu eaters.
This time, it’s supposedly the food of over-achievers, since Bo makes tofu duck for Holly. I’m sure this is the first time I’ve heard the word “gay” in a Christmas movie.
Holly goes back to work with a new appreciation for Milo’s outlook on life, and his suggestions for their ad campaign.
Non-Sequitur Title: The protagonist is named Holly, and the story takes place “two weeks before Christmas,” but she doesn’t really celebrate Christmas in this film or even take a vacation, unless you count the coma.
Bo is another deconstruction of love stories, similar to the actor paid to make a woman believe he loves her in Annie Claus is Comin’ to Town. Like many other doomed relationships, Bo’s big mistake is making decisions for Holly.
Again, there’s a clever subtext here, since Holly quite specifically thought she wanted a boyfriend who was already perfect, who could help her become perfect like him.Which can obviously lead to a relationship where she is controlled and not appreciated for who she really is.Coy Alert: Bo is supposed to be a mannequin who comes to life.Milo lectures Holly at length about the evils of advertising. "They die a little, because we’re selling them these unrealistic, unattainable lies.” Motif Alert: While trying to take a selfie to commemorate meeting Holly in an exclusive club, Milo stumbles, taking a picture of his hand holding Holly’s surrounded by blurs. This single photograph represents Milo’s life philosophy of finding beauty in the messiness of life, the destined romance between himself and Holly, and naturally becomes the perfect image for their ad campaign. After hitting her head on a sidewalk, Holly meets a seemingly perfect boyfriend, Bo.
